11 Best Physical Self Care

1. Regular exercise

Regular exercise has numerous benefits for both physical and mental health. It can improve cardiovascular health, increase strength and endurance, help with weight management, and reduce the risk of chronic illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease. Exercise can also improve mood, reduce stress and anxiety, and improve sleep quality. It is recommended to aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week, such as brisk walking, cycling, or swimming.

The main suggestion is to make regular exercise fun. If you are not a runner, don’t force yourself to go for a mile jog or step on the treadmill. Instead, invest in a few different activities to find what feels good for you and your body.

I personally love Groupon to find dance classes, aerial yoga, indoor rock climbing at a discounted price. That way there is a low risk if I don’t like the class, while at the same time I can get a taste of different forms of movement.

I also recommend trying Alo Moves, if you are into pilates, yoga, and HIIT Workouts. This is my absolute favorite go to for a quick workout while traveling or at home.

Another favorite is Bala. They have the best at home workout gear that is super cute and makes it fun to use. They also have free workouts that demonstrate how to use their workout gear. I have the bala bangles (ankle weights) and resistance bands.

Here are more favorites from Bala:

What ever you choose, make moving each day something that brings a smile to your face. Your body will thank you.

2. Adequate sleep

Making sleep a priority is a game changer! Adequate sleep is essential for good health and wellbeing. It is recommended that adults get 7-9 hours of sleep per night, while children and teenagers need even more. Getting enough sleep can improve mood, memory, and concentration, while also reducing the risk of certain health conditions.

If you have a hard time falling asleep, there are a few simple ways to relax the mind and body to drift off. The first is magnesium. While I am not a doctor, and suggest consulting your physician before taking magnesium, the supplement not only helps to fall alseep but improves sleep quality. I use the Nature Made Magnesium 250 mg.

Guided meditations or delta wave frequencies can also assist in relaxing the mind and body for adequate sleep. I am a sound healer and have a YouTube channel full of crystal singing bowls that have assisted a number of people in falling asleep.

3. Balanced and nutritious diet

Needless to say, how you fuel your body is important. A balanced and nutritious diet includes a variety of foods from all food groups, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Try to make your plate as colorful as possible, while including protein, starch, and fat. Also, try not to eat the same thing each day as the body also needs variety to feel satisfied.

It’s important to limit processed and sugary foods and to drink plenty of water. A balanced diet can help maintain a healthy weight and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

If you are brand new or need extra assistance on what to eat, I highly recommend Tone It Up Nutrition Plan. I have used their plans for close to 7 years now and they completely transformed the way I cook and eat. I am a vegetarian and opted for their vegan menus (I like to reduce the amount of dairy and eggs I eat while home).

At the end of the day, your body is uniquely yours and you will know what type of eating works best for you.

4. Hydration

Drinking enough water through the day is one of the simplest ways to practice physical self care, but often forgotten. Hydration is important because it helps regulate body temperature, transport nutrients throughout the body, and maintain proper organ function. It also helps prevent dehydration, which can negatively impact physical and cognitive performance.

Liquid IV includes electrolytes that will improve the quality of hydration with each glass. Their Cellular Transport Technology, or CTT, is the breakthrough delivery system, used in all of their products, designed to enhance rapid absorption of water and other key ingredients into the bloodstream. They come in a variety of different flavors to try!

Or you can keep track of your water intake with this helpful reminder water bottle. It is completely BPA Free and has an infuser if you want to add fruit or citrus to your water. Just like with frequent movement, make hydrating fun and enjoyable. Something you look forward to completing, instead of a task you dread.

5. Saunas or Infrared light therapy

Both saunas and infrared light therapy have potential health benefits. Saunas can improve circulation, promote relaxation, sweat out toxins, and may help with pain relief. Infrared light therapy can also improve circulation, aid in pain relief, and may have benefits for skin health. Red light therapy is reported to improve your skin’s appearance, such as reducing wrinkles. While blue light therapy is great to repair damaged skin, and improve acne. Ultimately, the choice between the two depends on personal preference and individual health needs. It’s best to consult with a healthcare professional to determine which option is best for you.

If you are in New York City, Higher Dose is an incredible infrared sauna that you can book for 30 or 60 minutes which includes complimentary beverages and toiletries. If you are not near their locations, they also sell infrared sauna blankets. These are the best infrared blankets on the market, and they are said to:

  • Elevates the body’s thermal energy
  • Enhances deep relaxation
  • Promotes glowing skin
  • Improves circulation

This is probably one of the more enjoyable physical self care activities. You can rest your mind and body while the sauna and light therapy do all the work.

6. Relaxation techniques such as meditation or yoga

Which brings us to the next physical self care, relaxation. We live in a society where being busy and on-the-go is our default. Finding time for deep relaxation whether that is through meditation or yin yoga is so valuable. Relaxing the body is important for many reasons, including reducing stress, improving sleep quality, lowering blood pressure, easing muscle tension, and boosting the immune system. It can also improve mood and overall well-being.

By going into deep relaxation meditation you can switch your autonomic nervous system from sympathetic (fight or flight) and high beta brain waves (over analytical) to parasympathetic nervous system (rest and restore) and alpha/ theta brain waves (the door to the subconscious).

Yin yoga is one of my favorite ways to fully relax the muscles and get deep into the connective tissues. Yogis say our issues are in our tissues, making this form of exercise one of the most beneficial for when we are stressed. Jonah Kest is one of my favorite yoga instructors for yin yoga.

7. Body massages

Body work is significantly important when healing from stress, anxiety, or trauma. Many people don’t feel comfortable or safe within their own bodies. Body massages help reconnect and find safety within our physical form.

Body massage can have various benefits, including:

  1. Reducing muscle tension and soreness
  2. Promoting relaxation and reducing stress levels
  3. Improving blood circulation
  4. Boosting immune system function
  5. Reducing inflammation and swelling
  6. Improving joint mobility and flexibility
  7. Enhancing the quality of sleep
  8. Providing a sense of overall well-being.

Acupuncture is another option if you have a specific issue or pain you’d like to address.

8. Hygiene and Grooming

Those face masks, bubble baths, hair trims, yep that is physical self care! Indulge in the process by trying new products, new salons, or create an evening ritual for yourself. Many people have an alarm to wake them up, but setting an alarm to fall asleep is equally as beneficial. You can set a time each evening to begin your evening grooming and hygiene routine to get ready for bed. This way you have ample amount of time to nourish and clean your body before falling asleep. Make it special by lighting a candle or playing calming music. Using aromatherapy also can help trigger the brain to understand now is the time to get ready for bed.

Proper hygiene and grooming habits are important for maintaining good health and preventing the spread of diseases. They also help to improve self-esteem and overall well-being. Regularly washing your hands, brushing your teeth, and taking care of your skin and hair can go a long way.

9. Use of sunscreen and protective clothing

Using sunscreen and protective clothing can provide numerous benefits, including:

  1. Protection against harmful UV rays
  2. Reduction of premature aging: Sun damage can accelerate the aging process, but using sunscreen and protective clothing can help slow this down and keep your skin looking youthful.
  3. Prevention of sunburn which can be uncomfortable and increase the risk of skin cancer.
  4. Improved skin health by providing a barrier against pollutants, dirt, and other irritants.
  5. Boosted self-confidence

This is one of those daily acts of kindness that only takes a few minutes to do. My favorite sunscreen is Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen. It feels incredible on your skin, plus you can layer your makeup easily on top. I personally have never broken out from using their sunscreen, but each person may have a different experience.

10. Stretching and flexibility exercises

We know stretching is good for us, but how often do we practice gentle stretches? Even laying down with our feet up against the wall is exceptionally beneficial for blood circulation.

Stretching and flexibility exercises can have numerous health benefits, including:

  1. Improved range of motion and flexibility
  2. Reduced risk of injury during physical activity
  3. Improved posture and balance
  4. Reduced muscle tension and soreness
  5. Increased blood flow and oxygenation to muscles
  6. Improved athletic performance
  7. Reduced stress and improved relaxation
  8. Improved joint mobility
  9. Reduced risk of developing chronic pain conditions
  10. Improved overall physical and mental well-being.

One way to make this more enjoyable is investing in a good padded mat. I love my Gaiam Thick Yoga Mat. It is far more supportive and comfortable than any other yoga mat I have had. It’s perfect for your joint and holding longer stretches.

11. Time for hobbies and leisure activities

Physical self care includes enjoying life and doing activities that make you genuinely happy to be alive.

Making time for hobbies and leisure activities is important for our overall well-being and can help reduce stress. Try scheduling specific times for activities you enjoy, such as reading, hiking, painting, or playing a musical instrument. Finding a hobby that you enjoy can also be a great way to meet new people and learn new skills. Remember, it’s important to prioritize physical self care and make time for the things that bring you joy.
